Osteopathy - History & Philosophy

Doctor Andrew Taylor Still founded osteopathy in the mid 1800's with the belief that the body has the innate ability to heal itself. He emphasised the importance of unobstructed movement in all fluids, tissues and joints and felt that in both health and sickness the neuro-muscular-skeletal system interacts with the rest of the body, including the internal organs.

 Your body

When part of the structure is altered through physical trauma, occupational strain, stress or emotional situations for example, a reaction may take place which disrupts communication throughout the body that can lead to abnormalities which cause dis-ease. The body attempts to resolve these problems of disturbed function and structure and in the majority of cases it is successful. However, it may require external assistance to optimise the potential of its own self-healing mechanisms.

Osteopathy is a system of medicine that takes into account the whole individual. It is important to understand as much as possible about you in relation to your current condition, previous problems and your environment; this enables the Osteopath to make appropriate intervention through the body`s neuro-muscular skeletal system, which can have a profound effect on your symptoms and the body as a whole to restore health and prevent illness and injury.
